In my own words:: "Miriam stayed in intensive care for 10 days and was treated at Children’s for approximately three weeks. Dr. Mouin Seikaly, physician director of the kidney center at Children’s, monitored her peritoneal dialysis treatments and continues to follow her progress today. "She became very sick, with acute renal failure and we started therapy right away. She was dialyzed for four to five days and was in intensive care for a while," Dr. Seikaly said. "She’s now a healthy girl, playing and doing well." "For a while, all we could do was pray," Newman said. "We were told that 10 percent of patients with HUS die. I believe that if we had put her to bed that Tuesday night that she would not have been there the next morning. We do not know for sure how she got E.coli but now she is doing great. Miriam is a very talkative, fun-loving 8-year-old, who loves to be in charge of everything and who is growing very well. We are so thankful God gave us back our precious daughter," she said."

This new work with NAD Therapy is very exciting and I think is right on target. It is indeed an energy-metabolic-deficiency (EMD) because in the absence of this coenzyme cycle almost all the reactions in the body run down... I congratulate Theo Verwey and his colleagues for this remarkable advance in using this concept and in using a simple test, the ratio of pyruvate to lactate as a diagnostic measure, to indicate the dose, duration of treatment etc.

The ratio of lactate to pyruvate reflects the NAD/NADH ratio and is useful in distinguishing primary defects. Measured enzymatically in blood or CSF as an index of defects of glucose oxidation (fed state) or gluconeogenesis (fasted).
