Alles hier staan onder die wil en bestuur van die matriarg Lady Marchmain (Emma Thompson) – oftewel God. En dit stel die sentrale tema van die fliek aan die orde: die mag van godsdiens. Ofskoon Lady Marchmain se godsdienstige fanatisme veroorsaak dat haar man haar verlaat en Julia en Sebastian deur skuldgevoelens verteer word, ofskoon hierdie soort godsdiens mense se verhoudings met hulself en met mekaar vernietig, kry dit ‘n houvas op hulle waaruit hulle nie kan ontsnap nie.
